‘There’s difference between being out of runs and out of form’ – Steve Smith on form resurrection in BGT 2024-25 series

'There's difference between being out of runs and out of form' - Steve Smith on form resurrection in BGT 2024-25 series

The modern-day Australia batting great, Steve Smith, recently silenced his critics with back-to-back centuries against India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25). Smith’s success after an 18-month drought without a Test hundred has once again put him in the runs.

Smith had faced an unusually prolonged period without a three-figure score. However, during this phase, Smith maintained that he was batting well and not out of form. In the current series, he earlier scored a 101 in Brisbane followed by an imperious 140 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

With the century at the MCG, Smith equalled the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s tally of 34 Test centuries. More significantly, he became the leading century-maker against India, surpassing Joe Root’s record with his 11th ton in just 43 innings. Speaking at a press conference after his MCG century, Smith how he faced the challenging period.

“Sometimes you can be hitting the ball really nicely, which I think I said to all you guys when I wasn’t scoring the runs. I actually felt like I was batting pretty well. And there’s a difference, I think, between being out of form and out of runs. So, yeah, I thought I was hitting the ball nicely. I mean, you’ve got to have faith. You’ve got to have a bit of trust in what you’re trying to do. I’ve played the game for long enough now to know that you can have your ups and downs. Having some faith and confidence,” Smith said.

“I think you need a lot of luck on these wickets to get big runs as well, the ones we’re playing at the moment. And last week I had my fair share. I think I got an umpire’s call and got beaten on numerous occasions as to on other days, I would nick it,” the 35-year-old continued.

“There wasn’t really a general plan. It was just go out there and play. Yeah, there wasn’t a real plan. It was just go out and play and see what’s going on. I thought Patty (Cummins) played really nicely. Really good, positive intent,” Smith concluded.
