The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 has undoubtedly been one of the most anticipated tournaments of the year. The tournament is scheduled for the latter stages of 2023 and is to be held in India. Having recently earned direct qualification to the World Cup, South Africa would look to shift their focus to assembling their strongest possible squad that would travel to India and aim to win the coveted title.

With many opinions flying around about the possible playing XI, many have come forward and opined that Faf du Plessis should return to the side following the veteran batter’s sensational form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

Reflecting upon the same, Proteas coach Rob Walter came forward and opined that it is quite unlikely that du Plessis feature for South Africa in the World Cup, however, he did not entirely rule that possibility out.

“First and foremost, for 50-over cricket, there’s a slight chance, but not a great one, that Faf would play. He’s got a few things that he needs to take care of physically that will allow him to continue to play T20 cricket, which is ultimately his bread and butter. I think it’s unlikely.” Walter told IOL sports.

Walter went on to praise du Plessis for his recent exploits in the IPL and opined that it would be naive not to think that du Plessis would strengthen the South African squad. In the 11 matches played in the IPL 2023, du Plessis has amassed 576 runs to his name and is currently the leading run-scorer in the league.

“It would be naive not to think that a guy like Faf would strengthen the squad. Of course, he would strengthen the squad; he’s showing himself to be one of the best players in the world. But as I said, it probably won’t happen. We are looking at a quality individual with really strong values and a guy who’s led his country. To fit him back into the team, for me, it’s not something that I worry too much about,” Walter said.
