Pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep form one of the most crucial final wicket partnerships in the third Test in Gabba and successfully avoid the follow-on. This was a terrific effort by the tail-enders who stayed resilient in the end and was praised by Australian assistant coach Daniel Vettori.

The fourth day of the Gabba Test ended on a good note for India, where the last wicket stand of 39 made sure India remained ended the day with 252 for the loss of nine wickets, while still trailing by 193. Though Australia are still very much ahead in the game, there will still be a slight disappointment of losing the opportunity of enforcing the follow-on. This topic was talked about by Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori.

“I think the only way to force the game was to force the follow-on, There was a desperation to get that final wicket. We thought we had a really good chance when Jadeja was dismissed, but it was a real fighting partnership from Bumrah and Deep”, said Vettori during the press conference at the end of Day 4.

Vettori on how the interruption of weather helped them in the game

Apart from the Indian tail-enders surprising the Aussie bowling attack in Sydney the interruption due to rain also caused some problems in the Test match, however, according to Vettori the extra breaks due to interruption from the weather helped their bowlers a lot in terms of workload management.

“The weather allowed us to operate in terms of breaks, with Mitch (Starc) and Patty (Cummins) able to come back on multiple occasions. If it had been full 90 overs, it would have been a lot tougher to manage. We always have the luxury to bowl Nathan (Lyon). So that alleviated a little bit of the concern,” Vettori added.
