The last few results in Tests have not been great for the Indian team as they missed out on their third consecutive WTC final after losing the series to Australia. There appear to be issues within the Indian dressing room as per some reports and the Indian selectors have been questioned over their decisions as well.
The loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 was the final nail in the coffin. The Sydney Test was another disappointing game for the Indian team which they lost by six wickets and ended their disappointing tour of Australia. This loss led India legend Sunil Gavaskar to question the selector’s decisions and said that they have to get rid of the star culture and select those players who fully prioritise Indian cricket.
“I think the next 8–10 days are crucial for Indian cricket to take a good, honest look at itself. Most importantly, the star culture has to end. Total commitment to Indian cricket is non-negotiable. Players must make themselves available every single time unless there’s a genuine medical emergency. If someone isn’t fully committed, they shouldn’t be considered for selection,” Gavaskar said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“We don’t need players who are partly here and partly elsewhere. It’s time to stop pampering anyone. The recent results have been disappointing—we should have been in the World Test Championship final but didn’t make it,” Gavaskar added.
Speaking of the upcoming schedule of the Indian team, they will now be going home and facing England in five T20Is and three ODIs to prepare for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 which will be played in Pakistan and UAE starting from February 19. This will be another opportunity to win an ICC event and make a comeback after the last few results they suffered in 2024.
