‘The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but I have loved it’ – Steven Finn calls time on his professional career

Former England international Steven Finn announced his decision to retire from professional cricket after giving up on battle with multiple injuries. The 34-year-old represented the Three Lions in 36 Test matches, picking up 125 wickets in the process. He has also played 69 and 21 ODI and T20I matches respectively and picked up 129 wickets in his white-ball career.

Announcing the decision, Finn confirmed that he is battling with an injury for the last 12 months and has admitted his defeat, hence, decided to hang up his boots. He added saying that the journey hasn’t been smooth due to multiple injuries he has suffered over the years but the pacer has enjoyed every bit of it.

“I have been fighting a battle with my body for the last 12 months and have admitted defeat to it. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to play cricket as my vocation since I made my debut for Middlesex in 2005. The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but I have loved it nonetheless. To have played 125 games for England, including 36 tests, far surpassed what I dreamed of,” Finn was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

After representing Middlesex for over a decade, Finn joined Sussex in 2021. The cricketer thus thanked the club for reviving his career and supporting him well for the last 12 months. He also stated that he enjoyed his time in Sussex and also thanked his former club, Middlesex.

“I want to thank Sussex Cricket for their support over the last 12 months especially and for welcoming me wholeheartedly into the club at the beginning of last season. It really is a great place to play cricket and I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to play more of a part on the field since joining the club. I retire with some amazing memories with England, Middlesex and Sussex, shared with fantastic people. Those will live with me forever,” Finn stated.
