Former India opener Aakash Chopra criticized the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) for not providing a clear update on Shubman Gill’s fitness. The young batting sensation has missed the team’s opening fixture against Australia in Chennai after suffering from dengue. He will now miss the side’s second game against Afghanistan in Delhi which will be contested on October 11, Wednesday.
Rahul Dravid, India head coach, had earlier stated that the right-handed batter was progressing very well but would not travel with the team to Delhi as he needed some more time to recover. Chopra expressed his disappointment with the team, stating everyone can assume Gill is affected by dengue or whatever as they will not disclose the actual reason.
“Shubman Gill is ill. He has not yet become fit. The Indian team have decided that they will not tell us clearly, that we can keep thinking, we can say it is dengue or whatever we feel like but they will not tell us,” Chopra was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
The 46-year-old went on to say that Gill was not seen in the ground and did not travel with the team which means his health condition is not that good.
“When he is not traveling and didn’t come to the ground in the last match, it means he is not in such a good position. The Indian team had claimed that he was getting better, was feeling very well, and that they would decide at the last moment. He is not even fit to go to Delhi and you were saying that you were monitoring him in Chennai,” the former cricketer added.

With Gill not taking part in the clash against Hashmatullah Shahidi’s Afghanistan, Ishan Kishan will be open along with captain Rohit Sharma despite bagging a duck against Australia at Chepauk. Apart from the wicketkeeper-batter, Rohit and Shreyas Iyer were also dismissed for ducks during the match. However, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul spearheaded India’s innings and helped the side overcome Pat Cummins and Co. by six wickets.
