Manchester Originals captain Jos Buttler has been in fine form in The Hundred 2023 tournament. With 142 runs from three games, England’s white-ball skipper is the leading run-scorer of the ongoing tournament. On Monday, August 7, he got out in the most unusual way, playing against the Birmingham Phoenix at Old Trafford in Manchester.

The 32-year-old struck a 33-ball 43 runs before being run out on the non-striker’s end in a bizarre manner. On the 67th delivery of the contest, bowled by Benny Howell, the wicketkeeper-batter made an agonizing dive while running for a quick single. However, his bat was raised in the air even though it was well inside the popping crease when Moeen Ali‘s direct throw broke the stumps. Eventually, the TV umpire ruled him out as the bat was not in contact with the ground.

According to the MCC law 38.1, “Either batter is out Run out if, at any time while the ball is in play, he is out of his ground and his wicket is fairly broken by the action of a fielder.”
