In a brilliant display of spin bowling, Tabraiz Shamsi spun a web around MI Cape Town during the SA20 game at Boland Park on Sunday, January 21. The left-arm wrist-spinner bowled a double wicket maiden in the 14th over, leaving the opposition struggling.

Shamsi’s first victim, Sam Curran, fell prey to a tossed-up delivery aimed at the leg stump. Attempting a sweep, Curran found himself top-edging straight to Fabian Allen at deep backward square leg. Shamsi, known for his flamboyant celebrations, didn’t disappoint as he showcased his magical jubilations.

The spinner continued his masterclass by dismissing MI Cape Town’s captain, Kieron Pollard, who departed for a golden duck, trapped lbw in front of the stumps. Shamsi’s cunning length ball spun towards him, leaving Pollard bewildered in defence.

Shamsi concluded his spell with remarkable figures of 2/11 in four overs, elevating his tally to six wickets in five games at an impressive economy rate of 6.94.

The outstanding bowling performance complemented a clinical batting display by Paarl Royals, setting a target of 163 for MI Cape Town. Jason Roy’s aggressive 68 off 46 balls, supported by Jos Buttler’s 54 off 42, propelled the Royals to a commanding total. The duo’s formidable 116-run partnership for the opening wicket paved the way for the team’s dominance.

In response, MI Cape Town faltered, succumbing to a total of 103 in 18.2 overs. Paarl Royals’ bowlers, led by Bjorn Fortuin’s 3/15, dismantled the opposition. Lungi Ngidi, Obed McCoy, and Tabraiz Shami contributed with two wickets each, while Andile Phehlukwayo chipped in with one.

With this triumph, Paarl Royals have ascended to the top of the SA20 points table, securing four wins in five games. Despite the setback, MI Cape Town cling to the fourth position, managing two victories out of five matches. Looking ahead, the spotlight shifts to MI Cape Town, and it will be intriguing to witness their resurgence following this defeat.
