The West Indies and New Zealand continued their ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign by taking on each other at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, in the 26th game of the tournament on Thursday, June 13. The game began with the West Indies batting first after losing the toss.

The side got off to a horrid start as the top order collapsed. Brandon King and Johnson Charles scored nine and zero runs, respectively. Nicholas Pooran added 17 runs on the board, with Roston Chase and Rovman Powell scoring zero and one run, respectively.

Looking in trouble, it was the knock of Sherfane Rutherford that stabilised the innings for the Windies. Scoring 68* runs in 39 deliveries, Rutherford helped the West Indies reach a total of 149 runs in the first innings.

As for New Zealand, Trent Boult was the highest wicket taker for his side, with three wickets to his name. Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson took two wickets each as well, with James Neesham and Mitchell Santner striking once each.

Exceptional bowling sees West Indies topple Black Caps

Aiming to chase down a target of 150 runs, New Zealand got off to a shaky start as well. Openers Devon Conway and Finn Allen scored five and 26 runs, respectively. Rachin Ravindra was dismissed for just 10 runs, with Kane Williamson adding just one run on the board.

After the top order’s failure, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips scored 12 and 40 runs, respectively, with James Neesham adding 10 runs on the board. The West Indies’ ability to take quick breakthroughs resulted in New Zealand falling just short.

Alzarri Joseph was the highest wicket-taker for his side, with four wickets to his name. Gudakesh Motie took three wickets, with Akeal Hosein and Andre Russell taking one wicket each, as New Zealand only managed to score 136 runs in the second innings, losing the game by 13 runs.

Here are the best tweets from the game:

in ICC tournaments i always support New Zealand after Pakistan.

But it is first time i am happy after seeing them getting lose, it may be just because of they prefer IPL over national duty and now facing results.#t20WorldCup2024 | #WIvsNZ

From 32-5 to winning the game . if u didn’t believe WI are one of the FAVOURITES u better start believing now 💯 A sign of a dangerous team ! coming back from a losing / down and out position to win the game . Not many teams would have comeback from this position. #t20WC #WIvsNZ
