New Zealand registered their first win of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday, June 15, at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, as they got the better of an in-experienced Uganda side. The Kane Williamson-led side had a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign after their defeats to Afghanistan and West Indies earlier in the competition and are eliminated from the tournament. New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first.

Uganda’s batters had yet another bad day as none of their batters looked comfortable against a powerful Kiwi bowling line-up. After six overs, Uganda’s score stood at 9/3, making it the lowest powerplay score by any team in the history of the tournament. Kenneth Waiswa was the only batter who scored in double digits. But his scores were also not impressive as he walked back after scoring a mere 11 runs.

New Zealand registers their first victory of the tournament

Earlier in the tournament, in the game against West Indies, Uganda posted the joint-lowest total in the T20 World Cup history with 39 runs. In the game against the BlackCaps, Brian Masaba-led side had a similar outing as they managed to post just 40 runs in 18.4 overs. Tim Southee was the wrecker in chief with the ball, picking three wickets.

With IPL 2024 being a run-fest with scores of 200+ being posted in every match, the ongoing marquee event is witnessing a series of low scores showing the unpredictability of the tournament.

In reply, New Zealand chased down the target with relative ease, with Devon Conway being the top scorer with 22 runs off 15 balls. Finn Allen was the only wicket which fell for New Zealand camp as they managed to win the game by nine wickets with 88 balls to spare. Southee was awarded the Player of the Match for his brilliant spell. Though the former runner-ups are out of the tournament but are playing to end their campaign on a high.
