South Africa registered their fifth consecutive win in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, as they beat the USA by 18 runs in the opening game of the Super Eight stage at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua on Wednesday, June 19.
The Proteas lost the toss and stand-in USA captain Aaron Jones opted to field first. Reeza Henricks fell cheaply but Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram took the attack to the USA bowlers and added 110 runs off just 60 balls. Harmeet Singh dismissed De Kock for a blistering 74 off 40 balls. From 126/1, South Africa crumbled to 141/4 in the space of 17 balls.
However, Tristan Stubbs and Heinrich Klaasen made good use of the solid platform and added 53 runs off 30 balls to take the Rainbow Nation to 194/4 in their 20 overs. Saurabh Netravalkar stood out with the ball for the USA, bagging two wickets for 21 runs in his four overs.

In reply, the USA batters showed great intent and got to the 50-run mark inside the powerplay for the loss of two wickets. However, the middle-order flopped badly as the debutants went from 53/1 to 76/5 in quick time. In dire straits, the USA needed a partnership to get them closer to the daunting target and they got it from the duo of Andries Gous and Harmeet. They added 91 runs off just 43 balls to bring the equation down to 28 required off the final two overs.
The penultimate over was bowled by Kagiso Rabada and the experienced pacer dismissed Harmeet for 38 off his very first ball to tilt the scales massively in favour of the Proteas. Rabada conceded just two runs in the 19th over, as Anrich Nortje had 26 to defend in the last over.
