South Africa took on Bangladesh in Match 21 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Nassau County Stadium in New York on Monday, June 10. The Proteas won the toss and opted to bat first. Bangladesh made a notable change in their side by bringing in Jaker Ali Anik for the out-of-form Soumya Sarkar.
South Africa had the worst start as opener Reeza Hendricks departed after a first-ball duck. Quinton de Kock fell right after as he walked back after scoring 18 runs. Skipper Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs followed suit after scoring four and zero, respectively. South Africa’s score stood at 25/4 after the end of the powerplay.
Wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen and dangerous David Miller stitched a much-needed 79-run stand for the fifth wicket before Klaasen walked back scoring 46 off 44. Klaasen in his 44-ball stay smashed two boundaries and three sixes.
Miller found company in Marco Jansen but fell right after scoring 29 off 38 and was the last wicket to fall for South Africa, as they ended their innings on 113/6 after their allotted 20 overs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib picked up three crucial wickets, while pacer Taskin Ahmed bagged two.
While chasing, Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side didn’t have a great start as opener Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das fell cheaply, both scoring nine runs, respectively. Experienced Shakib Al Hasan’s three runs to the tally was of no help.
Skipper Shanto was the next wicket to fall for the Bengal Tigers as he scored 14 runs off 23 balls with Bangladesh’s score standing at 50/4. Almost a run-a-ball situation from there, Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah stitched a much-required 44-run partnership to get their side back in the hunt. Hridoy walked back after scoring 37 runs off 34 balls.
Markram and Co. came back strong as they took the match till the very last over. 11 runs were required to win, and Keshav Maharaj was given the responsibility to bowl the last over and he did his job perfectly picking two wickets in the last over and helped his side clinch a narrow four-run victory. Maharaj was the best bowler for his side picking three crucial wickets and restricting Bangladesh to 109/7. South Africa also became the first team to qualify for the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup 2024.
