Afghanistan will look to topple rampant Australia in a crucial T20 World Cup 2024 face-off at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent on Sunday, June 23.

Afghanistan had a great start to their T20 World Cup campaign, as they notched up comprehensive wins against Uganda, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea in their first three games. However, in their last couple of matches, Rashid Khan and Co. suffered crushing defeats against the West Indies and India. Against the Men in Blue, Afghanistan were bowled out for 134, chasing a target of 182. The Blue Tigers have already lost one game in the Super Eight stage and would be desperate to revive their campaign with a win against the mighty Aussies.

Former champions Australia are on a five-match winning streak in the showpiece event. They defeated Oman, England, Namibia, and Scotland in the first round before getting past Bangladesh by 28 runs (DLS method) in a rain-curtailed affair. If India can beat Bangladesh on Saturday and Australia win their clash against Afghanistan, both teams will make it to the semifinals and their Super Eight clash on June 24 will not bear any consequence.

Afghanistan and Australia played one of the best matches in ODI history when they faced each other in the 50-over World Cup last year. The 2021 T20 World Cup champions were under the pump but a swashbuckling double-century from an injured Glenn Maxwell helped Australia snatch a win from the jaws of defeat with a record double century. Fans wouldn’t mind seeing another tight contest between them on Sunday.
