India clinched a narrow victory over Pakistan by six runs in a thrilling encounter at New York during the 19th match of Group A at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Asked to bat first, India struggled against Pakistan’s strong bowling attack. The innings got off to a shaky start with Virat Kohli departing early for just four runs, caught by Usman Khan off Naseem Shah. Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, contributed 13 runs before being caught by Haris Rauf off Shaheen Shah Afridi. Despite Rishabh Pant’s valiant effort with a score of 42 off 31 balls, India’s middle order failed to provide substantial support. The tailenders couldn’t add many runs either, and India were bowled out for 119 in 19 overs.

Pakistan’s bowlers, especially Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, stood out, claiming three wickets each. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Amir also chipped in with crucial breakthroughs.

Pakistan started off well but collapsed under pressure

In pursuit of 120 runs, Pakistan’s innings began cautiously, but Jasprit Bumrah’s early breakthrough by dismissing Babar Azam put them under pressure. Mohammad Rizwan held the innings together with a patient 31 off 44 balls, but Pakistan struggled to maintain the required run rate after losing key wickets in the middle overs. Despite a late flurry of boundaries from Naseem Shah, Pakistan fell short, ending their innings at 113 for seven in 20 overs, giving India a hard-fought victory.

We bowled well. In the batting, lost back to back wickets and had too much dot balls: Babar Azam

After the match, Babar, Pakistan’s captain, praised their bowling but admitted batting difficulties, citing frequent dot balls and the loss of quick wickets. He highlighted the team’s strategy of steady scoring but lamented too many missed opportunities. Babar stressed the need to win their next two matches, promising to address their mistakes and plan for success.

“We bowled well. In the batting, lost back to back wickets and had too much dot balls. Tactics was simple to play normally. Just strike rotation and the odd boundary. But in that period we had too many dot balls. Can’t expect much from tailenders. Our mind was to utilise first overs in batting. But one wicket down, and again we weren’t up to the mark in first six. Pitch looked decent. Ball was coming on nicely. It was a little bit slow, and some balls extra bounce. Have to win last two matches. Will sit and discuss our mistakes but looking forward to last two matches,” he said after the match.
