T20 World Cup 2024: Bangladesh's Qualification Scenarios - Can they reach Super 8 after loss to South Africa?

The Rainbow Nation South Africa (SA) squared off against Bangladesh (BAN) in Match 21 of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 edition, at the Nassau County Stadium, on (Monday) June 10, in New York. Notably, the game turned out to be an absolute humdinger as the Proteas narrowly edged out the Bangla Tigers by just four runs to become the first team to qualify for the Super 8s round of the mega ICC cricket event.

Notably, the Asian side had a hard time at the crease during their run chase which was quite identical to South Africa’s first innings. For Bangladesh, Tanzim Shakib claimed a three-wicker haul to run through the top order. However. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller played a sensible knock which meant that South Africa were able to post 113/6 on the board.

In reply, Bangladesh lost their openers Tanzid Hasan (9 off 9 balls) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (14 off 23 balls). The dent further continued as experienced campaigner Shakib Al Hasan (3 off 4 balls) along with Litton Das (9 off 13 balls) too went back to the hut in quick succession. As a result by the end of the 10th over, the Asian side were reeling at 50/4. Even though Mahmudullah tried to hold the innings from one end but failed to finish the job as Keshav Maharaj successfully defended the total for South Africa. Now the bigger question is what are the chances of qualifying for Bangladesh after losing to the Rainbow Nation?

As per the standings of the teams in Group D, with this win South Africa have picked six points (+0.603 NRR) and have become the first team to qualify for the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024. On the contrary, after starting the tournament against Sri Lanka on a winning note, the Bangla Tigers have been left puzzled after missing in what could have been a comfortable run chase.

Hence in order to do so, they will need their experienced players to come good to keep their Super 8 qualification hopes alive.
