Afghanistan registered a dominating win on Wednesday, June 04, at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, as they got the better of an inexperienced Uganda side.
The Uganda skipper Brian Masaba won the toss and opted to field first. The decision proved to be costly as the Afghan side got off to a flying start, scoring 66 runs without losing any wicket in the powerplay. All thanks to openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (76) and Ibrahim Zadran (70) who stitched a partnership of 154 runs for the first wicket. The Rashid Khan-led side was eyeing for a huge target, but the Ugandan side came back strong after a horrific start.
After both the openers departed with the score standing at 156/2, the Afghan side lost three quick wickets in terms of Najibullah Zadran (2), Gulbadin Naib (4), and Azmatullah Omarzai (5). Rashid and Co. ended their innings at 183/5 after the end of 20 overs.
Cosmas Kyewuta, Masaba, and Alpesh Ramjani were the best performers with the ball for Uganda, as they shared all five wickets between them. Skipper Masaba was the most economical bowler for his side as he bagged two wickets and conceded just 21 runs in his four overs.
Afghanistan register a convincing victory
Coming to the chase, Masaba and Co. had a challenging target to achieve against a star-studded bowling lineup of Afghanistan. With three spinners on their side and the pitch favorable to the spinners, Afghanistan were ready to display their best bowling efforts.
Uganda never looked in the game when they came into bat in the second innings, as they lost wickets in regular intervals. Inside the powerplay, they lost five wickets and scored just 21 runs. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the best bowler for his side as he picked up a fifer and ended with figures of 5/9 in his four overs. Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq were also brilliant with the ball as they both picked two wickets each. Uganda were bundled out for just 58, as no batter could stay at the crease for long.
Afghanistan will be confident after registering a victory in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024.
