Star Australia opener Steve Smith is ready to bat in any position that the team management may deem fit for him in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After David Warner’s retirement, Smith expressed the desire to open in Test cricket and the management backed him for the role. He has not been able to repay the faith, with his 91 against West Indies at the Gabba the only fifty-plus score at the position in four innings.

Smith said he just wants to just score runs in the home series against India and isn’t concerned about the batting position. He explained that playing against the new ball isn’t easy but he is happy with his performance against West Indies.

“You’ll have to ask the men in charge but I’m not fussed either way. Some challenging conditions with the new ball, in particular. So I would have liked to score a few more runs. That’s the game sometimes but I played pretty well in the second innings at the Gabba where we couldn’t get over the line, unfortunately. It’s just a position to me so it doesn’t really faze me too much,” Smith was quoted as saying by Code Sports.

I was disappointed not to be in the World Cup: Steve Smith

Smith revealed that he was disappointed after failing to get into Australia’s T20 World Cup squad. He explained that the selectors wanted to back power-hitters, which ruled him out of contention. The 35-year-old also expressed the desire to play in the upcoming edition of the IPL.

“I don’t know about international T20 stuff. You’ll have to ask the selectors there. I was disappointed not to be in the World Cup but that’s the way things go. They wanted all the big-hitters. I’d love to be part of the IPL again, for sure. I’ll be putting my name in the hat so just have to keep scoring runs. You never know, we’ll see what happens,” he added.
