In India’s second Test against Bangladesh Green Park in Kanpur, all eyes are on star batter Virat Kohli as he stands just 35 runs away from breaking legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar’s world record, to become the fastest player to reach 27,000 runs in international cricket.

With 26,965 runs in 534 matches, he is on the brink of joining an elite club of only three batters who have crossed the 27,000-run mark in international cricket – Tendulkar (34,357), Kumar Sangakkara (28,016), and Ricky Ponting (27,483).

The current record holder, Tendulkar, reached this milestone in his 623 innings. On the other hand, the modern-day great has batted just 593 times and is all set to add another illustrious feather to his cap.

Virat Kohli set to become third Indian with 30 centuries in Test and ODI cricket

Kohli began his Test career in 2011 against the West Indies and so far has scored 8871 runs in 114 Tests. He is also closing in on another significant milestone of 9000 Test runs. Achieving this would place him in the company of Indian batting legends Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.

Meanwhile, If he scores a century in the Kanpur Test, he will become only the third cricketer after Tendulkar and Ponting to score at least 30 centuries each in both Test and ODI formats. However, Kohli in the series opener at Chennai, scored just 6 and 17 runs, having put doubts over his form. The hosts have started the second Test well, as they have already scalped two wickets in the first session.
