Mumbai Indians (MI) crashed out in the race for the IPL Final following their crushing 62-run defeat at the hands of defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Qualifier 2 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, May 26.

Notably, skipper Rohit Sharma failed to hit the ground running for the side and was eventually sent packing for a meagre eight runs off seven balls during the chase. However, it is worth mentioning that Rohit has endured a rather lean patch with the bat in the 16th edition of the top-tier league.

In his 16th appearance, the skipper accumulated 332 runs with just two fifties to his account, coming at a dismal average of 20.75. His best knock came against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 11, when he scored a classy 65 off 45 balls which steered his side to a six-wicket win. For the unversed, Rohit recorded his joint-third lowest tally of runs in an IPL season since his debut.

Rohit’s batting stats over the years in IPL

Notably, Rohit’s worst season was in 2022, wherein he collected a paltry 268 runs followed by 286 runs in the 2018 edition for the Men in Blue and Gold. In addition to this, he got 332 runs in the 2020 season in 12 appearances, scoring just as many in the 16th edition of the lucrative T20 league.

Moreover, the flamboyant MI opener got his name registered in an unceremonious list in the 2023 season, as he registered the second-most number of ducks in the history of the competition. Failing to open his account twice on the trot in the IPL 2023 campaign, Rohit now has 16 ducks, one behind Dinesh Karthik (17) in the unceremonious leaderboard.

MI’s first title-winning year, which was in 2013, was also the same season when Rohit relished his best form. The skipper collected a mammoth 538 runs in 19 matches, lacing it with four half-centuries at a decent average of 38.42. With this, he was in the running for the IPL Orange Cap in 2013 but eventually lost it to CSK’s Michael Hussey, who notched up 733 runs.
