The fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will begin from July 1 with the final of the competition set to be played on July 21, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Friday, February 16. Like last year, a total of 24 matches will be played in the T20 extravaganza out of which 20 will be league matches and the remaining four being the knockout games.
Five teams will be seen competing for the crown of Sri Lanka’s premier domestic T20 competition. Each team will have a minimum of 20 players while the maximum limit of players per team is 24 out of which six can be from overseas.
The five teams will take on each other twice during the league stage with the top four qualifying for the knockouts. The top two teams will lock horns in the Qualifier 1, the winner of which will advance to the final. On the other hand, teams finishing in the third and fourth place will collide against each other in the Eliminator. The winner of the Eliminator game will take on the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2 which will decide the second finalist.

The schedule for the entire season will be announced in the coming weeks by the Sri Lankan board. Angelo Mathews-led B Love Kandy will be eyeing to defend their title in the upcoming season as they were crowned champions for the first team by defeating Dambulla Aura in the final of the last season.
Wanindu Hasaranga was adjudged Player of the Tournament of last edition
Notably, the first three seasons of the tournament were won by Jaffna Kings (Jaffna Stallions in first season) who were knocked out in the Eliminator of the previous season by B-Love Kandy. Wanindu Hasaranga was awarded Player of the Tournament of the previous season as he finished as the leading run-scorer.

He accumulated 279 runs from nine innings at an average of 34.87 and a strike rate of 189.79 with two fifties to his name. The upcoming season promises to be even more entertaining as fans prepare themselves to see the best of Sri Lanka and world cricketing talent putting on a show for the ages over the course of 21 days.
