Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced its 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against India, set to commence on July 27th in Pallekele. This announcement marks a significant shift in leadership and team composition, as the island nation seeks to redeem its T20I fortunes following a disappointing performance in the recent T20 World Cup 2024.
The Sri Lankan side managed to win only one match out of their four league games. This dismal performance has prompted changes within the team, most notably in the captaincy department.
Wanindu Hasaranga stepping down from his role as captain has made the way for Charith Asalanka to take the responsibility as the new T20I skipper. The decision comes after Asalanka recently led Jaffna Kings to their fourth Lanka Premier League title.

The newly appointed squad has a blend of experience and fresh talent. Alongside established players like Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, and Dinesh Chandimal, the selectors have included batting all-rounder Chamindu Wickramasinghe, the sole uncapped player in the lineup.
The squad selection, approved by the Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando, reflects a strategic approach to address the team’s recent struggles.

Players like Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, and Dasun Shanaka bring valuable experience, while young talents such as Dunith Wellalage and Matheesha Pathirana represent the future of Sri Lankan cricket.
On the other side of the pitch, India arrived in Sri Lanka on Monday. Under the leadership of new head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, the recently-crowned T20 world champions are looking to continue their winning momentum.
