A composed batting from Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh, followed by an all-round bowling display from bowlers helped Kolkata Knight Riders edge over Sunrisers Hyderabad by a margin of 5 runs in match number 47 of Indian Premier League 2023 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

Nitish Rana won the toss and opted to bat first. Marco Jansen, after being rested for a couple of matches, marked his return and struck twice in his very first over with his fiery bowling display, as Rahmanullah Gurbaz departed for a golden duck and Venkatesh Iyer departed scoring seven off four deliveries. Soon, Jason Roy was dismissed by Kartik Tyagi after a 19-ball 20 run cameo, KKR were left reeling at 35/3 inside 5 overs.

Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh led the recovery, as the duo added 61 runs for the fourth wicket. Nitish Rana smashed 42 off 31 before getting dismissed, courtesy of skipper Aiden Markram’s brilliance. Mayank Markande won the match-up against Andre Russell, as he ended his short cameo with a peach of a delivery. Rinku Singh kept piling runs with few big hits at one end and wickets kept falling at the other end. Anukul Roy scored a seven-ball 13 at the end to help KKR post a good total of 171/9 in 20 overs. For SRH, Marco Jansen and T Natarajan picked two wickets each.

Chasing 172, batters did not live-up to the expectations as the KKR bowlers ran through their batting line-up with lethal bowling displays, leaving SRH in trouble at 54/4 in seventh over. Harry Brook continued his poor run with second consecutive duck, as Anukul Roy did the damage by trapping him in front.

The South African batters Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen led the rescue with a 70-run stand as Klaasen toyed the KKR bowlers around the ground with a 20-ball 36-run knock and his innings included four boundaries. Shardul Thakur broke the partnership by dismissing Klaasen. Markram, however, led the fight back with a steady 41 off 40 but couldn’t complete the innings as Vaibhav Arora dismissed him with a slower ball in 17th over and from thereon, KKR bowlers bowled tight overs bringing the equation to 9 from the last over. Varun Chakravarthy held on to the nerves and defended beautifully to help KKR edge past SRH by margin of 5 runs.
