Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan lauded Gujarat Titans (GT) young batter Sai Sudharsan’s performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Sudharsan was included in Gujarat’s playing XI after Kane Williamson sustained an injury in the IPL 2023 opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 31. He has been instrumental in GT’s victories in the two matches they have played so far.
Pathan praised Sudharsan for making the most of his chance to bat at No. 3 for the defending champions in their first two matches. The 38-year-old added that the youngster was also outstanding in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
“He became a good player in the TNPL as well. His salary in the TNPL is more than the IPL. It is extremely enjoyable to see the experience he has gained in the last one year and someone’s loss is someone else’s gain,” Pathan said during a discussion on Star Sports after the clash between GT and Delhi Capitals (DC).
Pathan further stated that Sudharsan’s position as a southpaw will benefit the Gujarat Titans. He added that if he consistently performs like this, he will be very useful in maintaining a left-right batting combination on pitches. The batters are giving their best in the tournament and the compatition for the Orange Cap has already begun. If Sudharsan continues to bat in a similar manner, he too might be in contention.
“If it is a loss for an international player because of him not being there, this young player has grabbed that chance with both hands. He is a left-handed batter, so the better he performs, he will come in very handy to maintain a left-right batting combination on pitches that help the bowlers while batting at No. 3,” Pathan added.

Sai Sudharsan, 21, then hit an unbeaten 62 off 48 balls to help the Hardik Pandya-led side reach the target with six wickets and 11 deliveries to spare. GT will next take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on April 8.
