Former England captain Alastair Cook has proposed rethinking international cricket competitions that could see an alternative competition come up instead of the ongoing World Test Championship format.

He has also asked for an all-format league table that could potentially create a more engaging and comprehensive way of tracking international cricket performance around the world.

Cook has mentioned the challenges facing the current tournament structure. Speaking ahead of the second Test between New Zealand and England, he admitted that even as a cricket fan, he struggles to understand the existing championship’s difficult point system and the two-year format.

“It’s very hard to have tournaments which last two years and keep interested in it with percentage points if I’m honest. I’m a big cricket fan and I follow the game a lot, and I don’t understand it. Unfortunately, if you don’t understand the tournament you’re playing in and how it’s worked out, it’s not the easiest to follow,” said Cook as quoted by Wisden.

I was impressed by Jacob Bethell: Alastair Cook

Cook believes that by creating a true World Championship that incorporates all formats, every international match would gain more significance among the avid supporters of the game.

“I think all international cricket, T20, one day and Test matches, should be put into a table for two years and see how that looks, because then it’s not a Test Championship, it’s a World Championship. That means every game you play has got relevance even if it’s just a T20. See how that works, because this has worked in one sense, you get one good final and everyone enjoys that. But in terms of generating real interest in it, I don’t think there’s real interest, no,” he added.

While discussing the championship, Cook also heaped huge praises for Jacob Bethell‘s debut performance for England in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand. The former opener lauded the batter’s range of shots.

“I was impressed [by Bethell]. I particularly liked the way he gutted it out in the first innings. In the second innings, that was why he was picked for the white-ball, his array of shots… There’s a huge amount of growth there, without a doubt, but he’s nowhere near the finished article,” he further added.
