Shubman Gill has been in sublime touch, especially in 2023. Adding yet another feather to his cap, Gill became the batter to score the most runs in one-day internationals (ODIs) after completing 35 innings. Gill has scored close to 1900 runs to achieve the feat. The record for best for most runs after 35 innings was held by Hashim Amla (1844 runs), which Gill overtook during the ongoing second ODI of the series against Australia at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
Speaking more about the game, Steven Smith is captaining the Australian side in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins, while KL Rahul is captaining the Indian squad in the absence of Rohit Sharma. At the toss, Smith called it right and decided to bowl first on a flat track.
On a seemingly batting paradise in Indore, India got off to a shaky start, as they lost the prized wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad early on. However, Shubman Gill continued to fire from the other end alongside Shreyas Iyer. Gill is currently batting on 85 off 67 balls, while Iyer is supporting him equally well and is batting on 86 off 72 balls. Together, the duo has stitched a partnership of 171 runs, with 25 overs still remaining in the first innings.
Earlier in the game, Gill also dethroned Rohit Sharma’s record for most sixes in 2023 in ODIs. The Punjab batter hit a maximum off Cameron Green in the tenth over, which was his 44th six. The pitch is currently assisting the batters well, and the Indian team is looking set to put a mammoth total on the board. However, the Australian bowlers will look to get some balls in their favour to put up a fighting show in the game.
Meanwhile, India won the first ODI in Mohali at the IS Bindra Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, wherein Gill was the top-scorer with the bat, scoring 74 off 63 balls.
