Shreyas Iyer breaks slience on BCCI contract snub happening ‘due to lack of communication’

Shreyas Iyer breaks slience on BCCI contract snub happening 'due to lack of communication'

Despite being one of the top performers for India in the ODI World Cup 2023, Shreyas Iyer found himself in a difficult spot as the Mumbai batter was dropped from BCCI’s central contract list. After the World Cup, he travelled with the squad for the South Africa series but failed to make a mark. Even so, the team management showed faith in Iyer, who was called up for the first two Test matches against England.

To prepare well for the series, Iyer decided to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, but unfortunately, the cricketer failed to deliver in the first couple of games of the series. After which, BCCI advised him to play domestic cricket, but instead, he decided to skip the Ranji Trophy semi-final citing back spasm, a report which was shortly turned down by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The governing body didn’t like Shreyas’ decision and dropped him from the contract.

Later, he went on to win the Ranji Trophy representing Mumbai for their record-extending 42nd glory and later the IPL as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and addressed what went down between the two parties. The ace batter noted that there was a lack of communication and decisions were taken without talking to him. Notably, the Mumbai-born stretched that he wanted to work on his body and build some strength, for which he took some time off.

“I had a terrific World Cup and I wanted to take a break after that and wanted to work on my body and build some strength around certain area. Due to lack of communication, there were some decisions, that didn’t go in my favour,” Iyer said on his YouTube channel.

“But I realised that the bat is going to be in my hand and it’s on me to perform and win trophies. I decided that once I win Ranji Trophy and IPL that would be an apt answer for whatever happened in the past and thankfully everything fell to right place. I am grateful, how it happened,” he added.

Meanwhile, Iyer is currently not in the scheme of things in the Indian team. However, with consistent performance, the cricketer may make his return to donning the international jersey again.
