Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s recent struggles in Test cricket have sparked discussions about his place in the Indian team. The veteran batter’s disappointing performance in the Border–Gavaskar Trophy against Australia saw him score just 31 runs in five innings across three matches. With growing calls for his retirement, Rohit’s childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, has given a piece of advice to the Indian skipper during these tough times.
Rohit’s form in Test cricket has been a concern for some time. Speculation around his future increased when he opted out of the fifth Test in Sydney, triggering rumours of a retirement.
However, Rohit quashed such claims and revealed he is still going to play. Lad, who has mentored Rohit since his formative years, defended the cricketer. Lad asked for the veteran to go back to play some domestic games to return to form.
“I think Rohit has only two goals: first, to win the World Test Championship and second, to win the ODI World Cup. If he wanted, he would have retired from all formats (after the T20 World Cup title), but he only retired from T20 cricket. He is not the only cricketer who was struggling to score runs. He should play one or two domestic games to prepare for Test matches,” Lad said as quoted by News18.
The coach also said that with T20 cricket coming in the mindset of batters has changed. He also pointed out that when the 37-year-old scores runs, everyone praises him for his leadership but that’s not the case during a form slump.
“Because of T20 cricket, the mindset of batters has changed. He is a technically sound cricketer, and against England last year he was scoring good runs. If we win, people call Rohit the best captain, but when we lose, people say he doesn’t know captaincy,” he added.
