New Zealand continued their dominant run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat Afghanistan by 149 runs in Match 16 on Wednesday, October 18 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. After being put in to bat first, New Zealand posted a good total of 288/6 in their allotted 50 overs. Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips starred with the bat for Kiwis as the duo put on a century stand for the fifth wicket to bail their team out of trouble after early wickets.
Tom Latham played a true captain’s knock as he scored 68 off 74 balls smashing three fours and two sixes in his innings. The best shot of his innings, came in the 47th over bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai. Having been already clobbered for a six on a full delivery on the first ball of the over, Omarzai changed his length and dropped the ball a bit short.
However, Latham was ready for it as he fetched it from outside off stump and whacked it over deep mid-wicket with a horizontal bat launching the ball way back into the stands. The shot was even praised by the legendary India cricketer turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar.
