Sanath Jayasuriya was named as the interim coach of the Sri Lanka team ahead of the Indian team’s tour to the island country. The side made a resounding comeback to the short format of the game with a clean sweep in the three-match ODI series. The team is doing well in the Tests too as they outclassed New Zealand in the first Test at Galle Stadium.

As per reports from ESPNcricinfo, the veteran is likely to get his contract extended for one more year owing to the team’s impressive outings recently. The most remarkable outcome of his tenure other than the series win against India was the win against England in the Oval Test. Sri Lanka Cricket’s CEO, Ashley de Silva was optimistic about the desired outcome regarding the Sri Lanka stalwart and said that the negotiations are underway.

“We are in the final stages of negotiating the contract with him. Probably in the next two or three days, you will get to hear more,” said Ashley.

Jayasuriya was superb as cricket director and now as coach: Mathews

Another Sri Lankan star player, Angelo Mathews saw his white-ball career getting back on track. He had shown remorse over how his T20 career was mishandled by the management. The veteran went on to play World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024 thereon. The all-rounder speaking of Jayasuriya’s stay commented that the former Sri Lanka Cricket Director gives a lot of freedom to players.

“Sanath Jayasuriya was superb as cricket director and now as a coach. He communicates well and has given us a lot of freedom. We are all working towards one goal, and now everyone is on the same page. He’s also done a superb job grooming the players. He has been amazing. I wish him all the very best,” said Mathews.
