Indian captain Rohit Sharma is likely to join the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team’s practice session on Tuesday at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The veteran batter has resumed training at the MCA-BKC ground, to prepare for the upcoming Champions Trophy. His participation in Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy league game against Jammu & Kashmir is still not confirmed.

Rohit’s return to the Mumbai squad comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) efforts to prioritise domestic cricket for national players, especially in the red-ball format. The Indian team’s struggles, including their disappointing performance in the Test series against Australia and failure to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, have prompted a call for players to be back in the domestic tournaments. Indian team coach Gautam Gambhir was vocal about the importance of domestic cricket.

“I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket. That is how much importance domestic cricket needs to be given. Not only one game, but if they are available and have the commitment to play red-ball cricket, everyone should play domestic cricket. It’s as simple as it can get. If you don’t give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players that you want in Test cricket,” Gambhir had said after India’s series defeat in Sydney.

For Rohit, who last played domestic red-ball cricket in 2015 against Uttar Pradesh, this is an opportunity to get back his form. His recent outings in Australia were underwhelming with scores of 3, 9, 10, 3, and 6 across four Test matches, averaging just 10.93. These

“He will be coming for practice sessions with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team and it is still not decided whether he will be playing the next Ranji Trophy game against J&K. He will inform the MCA in due course,” a source in the MCA informed.

The BCCI has consistently encouraged players to feature in domestic cricket as a means to get back their form and address technical issues. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who also struggled in Australia, is set to feature for Punjab’s clash against Karnataka.
