The future of the Indian captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli in T20Is has been the talk of the town ever since the end of the ODI World Cup 2023. With the T20 World Cup 2024 just six months away, there are widespread discussions about whether the duo will feature in the mega event or will the team management trust the youngsters to end India’s ten-year-long ICC trophy drought.
According to reports, Rohit had a discussion on his T20I future in a recent meeting with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) in Delhi where they selected the squad for the South Africa tour and reviewed India’s performance in the ODI World Cup 2023. Rohit, who joined the meeting via Zoom call from London reportedly asked the selectors if they wanted him to be a part of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, the BCCI officials present in the meeting namely Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, and treasurer Ashish Shelar along with head coach Rahul Dravid and selectors unanimously agreed that Rohit is the right man to lead India in the next T20 World Cup.
They even wanted the skipper to take up the captaincy of the T20I side from the South Africa tour onwards. However, he requested a break from the white-ball leg of the tour following a gruelling World Cup campaign and will return to lead the side in a two-match Test series.
Uncertainty on Hardik Pandya’s fitness prompted BCCI to continue with Rohit in T20Is
Notably, Rohit and Kohli haven’t played a T20I since India’s humiliating ten-wicket loss against England in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022. In his absence, all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been leading the side since then. However, his ankle injury in the ODI World Cup 2023 has put a question mark on Pandya’s availability for the T20 World Cup 2024 which prompted selectors to offer the leadership role to Rohit.
