MS Dhoni finished his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign with 161 runs under his belt from 11 innings at a resounding strike rate of 220.54. However, Chennai Super Kings couldn’t seal a spot in the playoffs as they finished fifth on the points table.
After IPL 2023, the former India captain said that he would push his body to play one more season as a return gift for the phenomenal support his fans gave him throughout the tournament. After Chennai’s campaign in IPL 2024 ended on Saturday, May 18, with a loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, fans are concerned about the future of the 42-year-old. The chances of Dhoni playing next season’s IPL are quite slim.
A recent report said that the revered wicketkeeper-batter will wait for a couple of months before taking a call on his retirement.
“Dhoni has not told anybody in CSK that he is quitting. He has told the management that he will wait for a couple of months before taking a final call,” a source close to the developments told The Times of India.
The report further said that Dhoni was ‘devastated’ after the defeat and was among the first cricketers to leave the CSK camp for his hometown Ranchi on Sunday morning. A day later, he was also spotted riding his bike in Ranchi.

Ahead of IPL 2024, Dhoni dropped a bombshell as he handed captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The youngster led his team from the front and finished as the second-highest run-getter of the tournament. He helped CSK win seven matches out of the 14 but RCB progressed on the basis of a better net run-rate (NRR). The Chennai-based franchise couldn’t reach the playoffs for only the third time. Dhoni’s fans would hope that the stalwart continues to play at least one more season in the IPL and finish his illustrious career on a high by winning his sixth IPL title.
