India recently won the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 and under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, it was the second ICC title for the Men in Blue after the T20 World Cup win previously.

However, in between these victories, Rohit had a bitter-sweet time as leader of the Test side. He first whitewashed Bangladesh at home, but got a taste of his own medicine after New Zealand whitewashed India 3-nil. Then, India also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under, where he led India in three matches. Doubts started looming over his future as India’s Test captain since he had to drop himself from the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, where vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah led instead.

Contrary to the beliefs, a report from The Indian Express has emerged saying that Rohit will continue to be the first-choice skipper of the red-ball team and Bumrah has to wait before taking over the role full-time. As a result, India will be under the 37-year-old’s leadership for their upcoming Test tour to England, where they will be playing five Tests, starting June 20 at Leeds.

Stakeholders feel Rohit is the right candidate

The report further claims that the Nagpur-born’s stint as India’s preferred leader in both Tests and ODIs has solidified following the Champions Trophy triumph.

“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” a source in the report was quoted as saying.

Interestingly, there were several media reports that said Rohit might retire after the Champions Trophy, but the cricketer himself confirmed that he is here to stay. Addressing the media following the triumph, Rohit told that he has seen a lot of ups and downs in his career, and wishes to hang in a little more before he can call it quits in the international arena.

He concluded the press conference saying, “I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure that no rumours are spread moving forward. Okay, guys? Thank you so much!”
