India women went through an underwhelming campaign at the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The side began its campaign with a defeat against New Zealand women and then followed it up with a narrow victory against Pakistan women.
Furthermore, India then defeated Sri Lanka women but lost the clash to Australia women, which saw them being eliminated from the group stages of the competition. Seeing the side’s performance in the tournament, the BCCI is looking to make a decision on the future of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.
As per reports, BCCI will have a meeting with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar to discuss Harman’s future as a captain. It is worth noting that the meeting is expected to take place before India women’s squad announcement for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand.
If the reports are to be believed, there is no threat to Harmanpreet Kaur’s place in the lineup, but a support staff’s contracts may not be renewed.
“The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything that the team wanted, and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team, but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition,” a source in the know was quoted as saying by News18.

Harmanpreet Kaur was appointed as India’s skipper in 2016, and under her guidance, India managed to qualify for the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018 and 2023, even competing in the final in 2020.
Over the years, she has been a stalwart for the Indian team, and despite the side’s recent performances in the Women’s T20 World Cup, there is no doubt that Harmanpreet Kaur has been one of the most important players for team India over the years.
