The year 2024 was a memorable one for cricket, with a packed calendar featuring the ICC T20 World Cup hosted by the West Indies and USA, as well as the biggest franchise league, the Indian Premier League (IPL). Though the cricketing action was the main attraction, the jerseys also stood out as they displayed diverse cultures, confidence, and individuality.

Interestingly, Uganda’s men’s team in the T20 World Cup had to have a jersey modification as the original design, inspired by the national bird, the grey crowned crane was chosen through a public competition, with Elijah Mangeni’s design winning hearts. However, the ICC asked for the removal of a feathered pattern on the sleeves, leading to a revised version of the jersey.

Furthermore, during the England Women’s tour of South Africa, the host team replaced their traditional green jerseys with black ones during the second ODI in Durban to spread awareness against gender-based violence. The World Cup witnessed the creative evolution of jerseys, with all 20 participating teams bringing distinct designs. Vibrant colours, patterns, and cultural symbols became the talking point.

Let’s take a look at some eye-catching jerseys of 2024:

5. Australia T20 World Cup jersey

Australia’s T20 World Cup jersey for this edition saw them turn away from their iconic yellow kit, with a jungle green outfit along with subtle gold accents, a design that is similar to their 2023-24 home summer kit. This dark green jersey had a gradient pattern on the top and gold underarm sections.

The side panels displayed the Walkabout Wickets artwork, a piece first introduced in 2016, which shows Australia’s deep connection with its Indigenous heritage. This green outfit also ended the streak of black T20 World Cup kits worn since 2012. Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood also gave his opinion on the jersey. “When you think of green and gold, you think of Australia.”

Going green!

Rajasthan Royals unveiled their special all-pink jersey for their #PinkPromise campaign in the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 6, 2024. The match, held at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, saw the team wear the outfit to showcase their support to the empowered women in rural Rajasthan.

The pink jersey symbolizes resilience, grace, and the strength of women in Rajasthan. It also displayed the team’s support for the Royal Rajasthan Foundation’s mission of women-led transformation. The Foundation, under its motto “Aurat Hai Toh Bharat Hai,” has positively impacted over 15 million women through initiatives like Project Khushaali, focusing on water access, solar energy, upskilling, and mental health. To honour women driving change, the jerseys featured their engraved names, celebrating their contributions to solar energy and water conservation.

3. New Zealand T20 World Cup retro jersey

New Zealand Cricket had an impressive retro-inspired jersey for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, drawing inspiration from their iconic 1999 Cricket World Cup kit. The newest jersey featured a mix of teal and heritage grey, reflecting the early 90s, with minimal use of the traditional black. The only black element was the bold “New Zealand” text placed across the front on a white background. Moving away from the classic fern graphic, the kit included the Southern Cross, symbolic of New Zealand’s heritage and identity.

Though the team got significant attention for their jersey, their on-field performance wasn’t as pleasing. Placed in Group C, the Kiwis failed to qualify for the Super Eight stage as they lost two out of their four league games, including a historic defeat at the hands of Afghanistan.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) donned a special green and maroon jersey during their IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. This was done to pay tribute to Kolkata’s iconic Mohun Bagan Super Giant football club, also owned by the RPSG group, led by Indian billionaire Sanjiv Goenka.

While LSG typically wears dark blue jerseys, the switch to green and maroon was due to the connection between the franchise and the historic football legacy of Mohun Bagan. This was not the first time LSG made this change; they wore the same jersey in IPL 2023 during a fixture against KKR.

1. India T20 World Cup jersey

Team India’s T20 World Cup jersey, designed by Adidas, was dominated by the iconic blue, but the jersey also had a share of saffron hue on the shoulders and sleeves, displaying the energy and passion of Indian cricket. A tricolour stripe on the shirt collar celebrates India’s national pride, while three distinctive white stripes around the shoulders, were to showcase the maker’s signature design.

This jersey holds even greater significance as India, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, ended an 11-year ICC title drought, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. The jersey was crafted with sustainability in mind, as it was made from 100% recycled materials and featured Adidas’ HEAT.RDY technology for breathability and comfort.

“There would be nothing better than using the Indian Cricket Team’s jersey as a canvas to tell a story. We didn’t want to put random graphics or shapes. We wanted to narrate the crafts and culture of India. We looked at a bunch of different crafts and felt that Ikat was a textile technique. We needed another layer of narrative, hence we added how fierce the tiger is when it’s out there as it’s the national animal, so we brought the stripes of tiger, again using Ikat,” Aaquib Wani, designer of the Indian cricket team’s jersey said.
