Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan’s younger brother, broke the 29-year-old record of legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar, becoming the youngest one to hit a century for Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy final. He achieved the feat during the ongoing clash between Mumbai and Vidarbha at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Musheer reached a three-figure mark of 255 deliveries on Day 3 on Tuesday, March 12. Aged 19 years and 14 days, he added two runs off Vidarbha pacer Yash Thakur to score his second first-class ton. Tendulkar, on the other hand, had made a stunning 140 against Punjab in the 1994-95 Ranji Trophy final at Wankhede when he was 21 years old.

After being put to bat first Mumbai scored 224 runs in the first innings with Shardul Thakur scoring a gritty 75 runs while batting down the order. Mumbai bowlers ran riot in the second innings as Vidarbha’s innings folded to 105 runs.

After taking a 119-run lead in the first innings, Mumbai batted again on day two with Musheer and captain Ajinkya Rahane firming the innings after openers Prithvi Shaw and Bhupen Lelwani fell cheaply. The duo made the score to 141 for two with both securing their half-centuries on Day 2 stumps. Musheer continued his momentum from the start of Day 3 and anchored the innings alongside Shreyas Iyer after Rahane was sent back for 73.

Musheer breaks Tendulkar’s record

Sachin Tendulkar was holding the record of the youngest batter to score a hundred in a Ranji Trophy final since 1995. A month short of his 22nd birthday, the Master Blaster had hit a double hundred in the 1994-95 season final against Punjab. Coincidentally, the 50-year-old was in attendance when Musheer broke his record.

Tendulkar scored a gritty 140 for his side during that final as Mumbai declared their first innings at a mammoth 690/6. His knock was crucial for the side as it helped the team to lift another title. For the unreversed, Mumbai have clinched the Ranji Trophy, the premier domestic competition, a record 41 times across 47 finals.
