India’s captain Rohit Sharma faced criticism from various quarters following a crushing 10-wicket defeat to Australia in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Former cricketer Madan Lal opened up about a warning about the consequences of continued failure.

The loss at the Adelaide Oval recorded India’s fourth consecutive defeat under Rohit’s captaincy which places him alongside legends like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who also endured similar streaks of Test defeats. Rohit’s struggles are not confined to captaincy, his batting form has been also a cause of concern. He managed just nine runs across two innings in Adelaide, following a series of underwhelming performances against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

With Rohit averaging just 10.50 against Bangladesh and 15.17 against New Zealand earlier this year, his once-reliable bat has turned into a liability. His lean patch, as Madan Lal mentioned, not only affects his record but also reflects on his decision-making as a leader.

“Questions will be raised on his form. He has had a lot of failures. He is a top-class player, but you have to score runs,” Madan Lal said as quoted by NDTV Sports.

Rohit’s runs are important because he is a world-class player: Madan Lal

The visitors were bundled out for 175 in their second innings, leaving the hosts needing just a small target, which they chased down without losing a wicket. Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins led a fiery bowling attack, claiming a five-wicket haul, while Travis Head’s century added to India’s misery. Fired up after a loss in the first Test, the Australians delivered a commanding victory, levelling the series 1-1.

“Sometimes, when your form is not good, it reflects on your captaincy. The form is one match away, but he has to score runs. No matter what position he plays, his runs are important because he is a world-class player. You can only stop criticizing players by scoring runs,” he added.
