Australian spinner Nathan Lyon picked up eight wickets during India’s second innings of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The hosts were bundled out for mere 163 runs with just a 75-run lead on Day 2 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.
Lyon troubled team India batters and thus offered a golden opportunity for his side to bounce back in the series. Apart from Cheteshwar Pujara, no other batter managed to show an impressive performance in the second innings.
The veteran off-spinner was full of praise for Pujara as he talked about his solid defense in the second innings. 35-year-old Pujara scored 59 off 142 balls and finished as the top-scorer for the Rohit Sharma-led side.
While talking in a press conference after the day’s play on March 2, Thursday, Lyon said
“Cheteshwar Pujara is an unbelievable cricketer. Bounce in Gabba or turn here, nothing affects him. He has unbelievable defense. Test cricket is all about defense.”
Notably, it was Lyon who picked up the wicket of Pujara at a very crucial stage in the game. The 35-year-old looked very determined during his 59-run knock, however, a stunning catch by Aussie skipper Steve Smith at leg slip ended his stay.
Lyon also lauded Smith for taking Pujara’s catch and said, “Hats off to Smithy!”
Lyon further praised Smith and Pat Cummins, stating Australia’s cricket is in the right hands. He also mentioned his equation with Smith on and off the field.
“We know how good Smith has been as captain Played with Smith for a long time. We are good friends off the field too. His brain regarding cricket tactics has been very good. Both Pat Cummins and Smith means Australian cricket is in right hands,” Lyon added.
While talking about the comparison of Australian and Indian spinners, Lyon said he and his young partners are focused on making their own space. He also said that he is really proud of the spin-bowling unit that Australia have.
“We want to own our space, learn from the Indian guys, they are legends here in India but we want to make our own space. I am really proud of this bunch (of spinners),” he said.
