Australia spinner Todd Murphy is trying his hardest to claim his position in the side as the rightful successor to Nathan Lyon. Murphy had been struggling with injuries recently and even witnessed a dip in his form. Murphy got off to a great start in his international career, where he took on the likes of India and England.
However, stepping into Lyon’s shoes, Murphy suffered a series of injuries. In the 2023-24 domestic season, a right shoulder injury affected his form, and he could not perform at the peak of his powers.
“I reckon that was probably the biggest challenge; I built it up like it was going to be quite an important summer for me, and I really wanted to do well off the back of that (his Test appearances). Then unfortunately it just didn’t play out like that,” Murphy told cricket.com.au.
“Then unfortunately it just didn’t play out like that. It was just challenging the whole way through, and I never felt like I was at my best. But I think it was one of those (experiences) that you look back on and you take a bit out of. I learnt a few things about myself and how I’m going to approach games going forward,” he added.
It was just challenging the whole way through: Murphy
Managing 17 wickets at an average of 38, Murphy was aware that he was not yet at his full potential. He came forward and talked about how his injury has been a real learning experience for him and that it could make him a better cricketer in the longer run.
“It was just challenging the whole way through, and I never felt like I was at my best, But I think it was one of those (experiences) that you look back on and you take a bit out of,” Murphy said.
“I was always just up against it, going into games never feeling good and confident in my shoulder, which was tough work,” he added.
