‘Pockets pretty heavy’ – Michael Neser pulls Spencer Johnson’s leg over massive IPL gig

Spencer Johnson, Australian fast-bowler, has reacted after being brought by Gujarat Titans (GT) for a whopping INR 10 crore during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction in Dubai on December 19.

While Johnson always had confidence in his skills, he had reservations about whether his body could withstand the rigors of fast bowling. He stated that he did not expect anything like this but always believed in what he was capable of.

“I never thought I’d be in this situation … I wasn’t expecting anything. I felt like I had the potential, (but) it was a question of whether I could get myself right. I’ve always had that inner belief, but it was more whether my body would let me (perform at the highest level),” Johnson was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket.

Johnson, who entered the auction for a base price of INR 50 lakh, further admitted that he had lost hope when the event dragged on. “The longer it was going, the less chance I had,” he added.

The 28-year-old left-arm quick went on to express his delight to get the opportunity to represent the Titans in the upcoming edition of the IPL. He will now join fellow Australian Matthew Wade, New Zealand white-ball skipper Kane Williamson, Afghan spin wizard Rashid Khan and Indian stars Shubman Gill and Mohammed Shami.

“It’s a moment for my whole family. They’ve been there the whole way, so for them to experience it as well, it’s pretty special. I’m very excited to be a part of Gujarat. They’ve played in two (IPL) finals already. They’ve got an unbelievable list and unbelievable support staff,” he further said.

After earning a deal for a remarkable sum during the IPL auction, Johnson earned applause from his fellow teammates at the Brisbane Heat.
 
“His pockets are pretty heavy. All the boys are lining up for his shout of coffee this morning,” Neser joked before acknowledging the work Johnson had put in to overcome injuries that had plagued him. Everyone knew how talented he was, it was just that injury after injury held him back, but he’s found that sweet spot now. He’s had an incredible 12 months … (and) he’s been rewarded with a nice pay cheque,” said Johnson’s Heat teammate Michael Neser.
