People expect Tristan Stubbs to hit sixes every ball, he’s a lot better player than that: Robin Peterson

Warriors coach Robin Peterson believes that Tristan Stubbs and the other young players in the South Africa A team should be given the opportunity to play in all formats of the game. Stubbs was instrumental for South Africa’s A squad on their visit to Sri Lanka when they played two unofficial Test matches.

South Africa A defeated Sri Lanka A by 160 runs in the first Test match. After being dismissed for a duck in the first match, he made a stunning comeback and scored a magnificent century in the first innings of the second match to put his team in a strong position. He scored 117 off 181 with the help of 15 boundaries and a maximum. Notably, he faced more deliveries than any other batter in the team during this tour.

Peterson praised Stubbs, saying that he thinks the 22-year-old had prepared well for the series against Sri Lanka. He also stated that while in India to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the youngster worked hard, and the coach conversed with the Mumbai Indians (MI) coaching team. He added that the batter did all the hard yards under similar conditions, so he believes he went to Sri Lanka very well prepared.

“Firstly, I think he prepared well because at the IPL he was training his butt off. When I was there in India, I could tell that he was working hard and the conversations I was having with the Mumbai Indians coaching staff in the background they told me he was putting in a lot of work,” Peterson said in an exclusive interview with IOL Sport.

“Also, he was doing all this hard work in similar conditions, so I think he went to Sri Lanka very well prepared,” he added.

I think Stubbs is a modern player that can score quickly: Peterson

The Warriors coach has seen Stubbs’ potential better than any other, asserting that the youngster has been unfairly placed in situations where people want him to hit sixes on every ball. Stubbs, according to the 43-year-old, is a modern player who can score quickly, absorb pressure, and transfer pressure on the opposition. He added that a coach would understand the potential in the fourth innings, when the team has to chase.

“I feel he’s been unfairly put in positions where people expect him to hit sixes every ball; he’s a lot better player than that. I think he’s a modern player that can score quickly, absorb pressure, and transfer pressure and as a coach you know that in the fourth innings when you have to chase, you’re always in with a chance with Stubbs at the crease,” the former South Africa cricketer added.
