As per recent developments, Australia might have to contest the two-Test series against Sri Lanka without the services of full-time skipper, Pat Cummins. The all-rounder admitted that he “might struggle” to feature in the forthcoming Test series, as he looks forward to the arrival of his second child.
Cummins was asked in the post-match press conference after the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy whether he felt he “had completed cricket” by attaining almost all major accolades during his stint as the skipper of the Australian side. Notably, Australia won the ODI World Cup in 2023 as well as the World Test Championship in 2023 under Cummins’ leadership.
Cummins admitted to assuming the role of captaincy for as long as possible. He shared that he enjoyed shouldering the responsibility.
“First of all, I absolutely love what I do. That’s the biggest driver in wanting to play Test cricket and work with this team and support staff. I love everything about it; it’s that much fun. If I can keep doing it for a while, even better,” stated Cummins during the post-match press conference, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Cummins speaks about balancing present and future
In the same vein, Cummins spoke about the exciting prospects the team has in terms of future leaders and options.
“You always talk about [succession]. We have two vice-captains in the team. We have had three debutants in this series. You’re always balancing between the here and now, but have a bit of an eye towards the future. These are conversations we always have, but I don’t think there is any point in doing things for the sake of it. Those can play out over the next few years, added Cummins.
As for the upcoming red-ball series against the island nation, Steve Smith is reported to lead the side. The former skipper has filled in for Cummins four times previously.
