Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat made his country proud by securing the Bronze medal in the men’s 57 kg Freestyle Wrestling at the Paris Olympics on Friday, August 9, at the Champ de Arena. This turned out to be India’s sixth medal at the ongoing edition of the global event.

Sehrawat became the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal as he achieved the monumental feat at the age of 21 years & 24 days. He bettered PV Sindhu, who won the Silver medal at the 2016 Olympics at the age of 21 years, one month & 14 days. Interestingly, Sehrawat was also the youngest male wrestler at the Paris Summer Games.

Sehrawat defeated Puerto Rico’s Darian Doi Cruz to secure the Brone medal. He lost his semi-final encounter against the top-seeded Japanese wrestler, Rei Higuchi, on Tuesday. With the Birohar-born’s latest achievement, India continued their medal-winning streak in wrestling at the Olympic Games in every edition since 2008.

The U-23 world champion was the only male Indian wrestler to earn a spot at the Paris Games. He showed his class on Friday to script history. After Sehrawat’s feat, India are on the cusp of equalling their impressive tally from the Tokyo Games, where their athletes secured a total of seven medals. He won the fifth Bronze medal for India at the ongoing Olympics, while Neeraj Chopra clinched Silver in the men’s javelin throw.

After this glorious triumph, an emotional Sehrawat dedicated his medal to his late parents, who he lost when he was just 11 years old.

“My parents always wanted me to be a wrestler. They didn’t know anything about the Olympics, but they wanted me to be a wrestler. I dedicate this medal to my parents and to the nation,” he was quoted as saying by Business Today.
