After doing remarkably well in the U19 World Cup, Mumbai Indians signed young Kwena Maphaka for the ongoing IPL 2024. However, in his debut match in the cash-rich tournament, the young South Africa pacer leaked 66 runs in his four overs as Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 277 runs in 20 overs – which is the most by any team in the history of the tournament.
During the match, MI skipper Hardik Pandya was spotted motivating the young cricketer multiple times but unfortunately, the night didn’t pan out well for the pacer. However, after the match, legendary South Africa pacer Dale Steyn came in support of the youngster and motivated him to bounce back stronger in the tournament.

Steyn wrote on his X account that he feels for Maphaka but he believes that the young pacer will be fine in due course as Mumbai Indians have the right people to guide him. The former cricketer added that the future will be better for Maphaka and also congratulated him for making his IPL debut at just 17 years of age.
“I woke up feeling for Kwena Maphaka today, but I know he’s surrounded by some amazing people at MI and he’s gana be absolutely fine. His first experience, regardless of result or performance, should still be the most amazing cricket experience he’s ever had. At just 17, it’s only upwards from here. Well done young man,” Steyn tweeted.
