India sought redemption against New Zealand, outclassing them by 70 runs in the first semifinal of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15. It was the Kiwis who dashed India’s hopes of securing their third title in the marquee event, defeating them by 18 runs in the knockout clash in Manchester four years ago.

Speaking of today’s clash, India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first. India delivered another dominant performance, defeating the Black Caps by 70 runs to secure a spot in the final of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. The final, scheduled for November 19, will see India facing either South Africa or Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Batting first, India posted a massive total of 397/4 in 50 overs, restricting New Zealand to 327 in 48.5 overs.

Virat Kohli, who is in red-hot form, notched up his 50th ODI century, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in the 50-over format. The former India captain’s knock was complemented by Shreyas Iyer, who scored a brilliant 105 (70). Earlier, Rohit and Shubman Gill gave India a solid start as the pair added 71 in 8.2 overs before the former fell to Tim Southee for 47 runs. Gill played a remarkable knock, but he had to retire hurt due to cramps at 79. He later returned to bat in the final over, adding a run.

Mohammed Shami emerged as the hero for Team India, delivering a clinical bowling performance and taking seven wickets. Shami made an impact with his first ball, dismissing Devon Conway, and followed it up by removing Rachin Ravindra in the next over. Williamson and Daryl Mitchell then built a substantial partnership of over 150 runs for the third wicket.

However, Shami later struck twice by first dismissing Williamson for 69(73) and then trapping Tom Latham LBW for a two-ball duck. In the process, the veteran pacer reached 50 wickets in World Cups, becoming the quickest bowler to achieve this milestone in the tournament’s history. Mitchell, on the other side, scored a century and formed a crucial 50-plus run partnership with Glenn Phillips for the fifth wicket. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Phillips for 41(33) in the 43rd over, and Kuldeep Yadav removed Mark Chapman in the following over. Shami then crushed New Zealand’s hopes by removing centurion Mitchell for 134(119) in the 46th over, adding two more wickets to his tally and handing India a clinical win.
