In a stunning turn of events at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Afghanistan secured a historic victory over England in the 13th match of the ODI World Cup 2023. English captain Jos Buttler’s decision to field first appeared to be a tactical one on a pitch seemingly favouring bowlers, but Afghanistan had other plans.
From the first ball, it was evident that Afghanistan’s opening batters, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, meant business. Their aggressive style of play put England’s bowlers on the back foot, as they stitched an impressive partnership that yielded 79 runs in the initial ten overs.
However, Adil Rashid managed to break the opening stand by dismissing Zadran, who was caught at short mid-wicket. England then followed up with two more crucial wickets, raising hopes of a turnaround. Gurbaz was also run out due to a misunderstanding with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. Mark Wood’s extra pace further troubled the Afghan batters, leading to wickets falling during the middle overs.
Despite these setbacks, Ikram Alikhil emerged as a standout performer, playing a classy innings of 58 and contributing significantly to Afghanistan’s total of 284 runs.
Chasing the target of 285, England got off to a shaky start when Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed Jonny Bairstow early on. Joe Root and David Malan were also quick to follow, leaving England in a shaky situation. Jos Buttler’s departure at the hands of Naveen-ul-Haq only added to England’s woes.
England’s glimmer of hope came in the form of Harry Brook, who displayed grit and determination, scoring 66 off 61 balls. However, once Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed Brook, the momentum swung firmly in Afghanistan’s favour. Mujeeb bowled brilliantly, claiming three crucial wickets in the middle overs and dismantling England’s middle order.
In the end, Afghanistan secured a historic victory, defeating England by a significant margin of 69 runs.
