New Zealand has suffered a major setback ahead of their upcoming ODI series against Pakistan, as captain Tom Latham has been ruled out due to a fractured right hand. The injury, sustained during a training session, will keep the wicketkeeper-batter sidelined for at least four weeks. In his absence, Michael Bracewell will continue to lead the team, while Henry Nicholls has been called up as a replacement.

The Black Caps will enter the ODI leg of the tour after a convincing 4-1 victory over the Men in Green in the T20I series. The hosts were hoping to carry that momentum into the ODIs, but Latham’s injury has now raised concerns. Latham, who was set to captain the side while Mitchell Santner is engaged in the IPL, was struck on the right hand during a net session earlier this week. X-rays confirmed the fracture, ruling him out of the series.

Meanwhile, the wicketkeeping duties will now be handed over to Mitch Hay, while Bracewell, who successfully led New Zealand in the T20I series, will continue to captain the ODI squad. Furthermore, Will Young will also be unavailable after the first ODI in Napier, as he will leave to be with his wife before the birth of their first child. In his absence, uncapped 23-year-old batter Rhys Mariu has received his maiden call-up to the squad.

Coach Gary Stead on squad adjustments and player opportunities

Nicholls, who last played an international match against Sri Lanka in November last year, returns to the squad following a strong domestic performance. Despite missing a significant portion of the season due to a calf injury, Nicholls has scored five 50-plus scores in his last six innings.

“We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons. What it does do is offer opportunities to other players, and it’s nice to introduce Rhys into the environment for the first time, as well as welcome back Henry. Henry’s been in good form since returning from his three-month injury lay-off, and he’ll add valuable skills and experience to the team,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said in a statement.

The three-match ODI series kicks off on March 29 at McLean Park in Napier, followed by fixtures in Hamilton and Mount Maunganui on April 2 and April 5, respectively.
