‘No way we’re going to play here’ – Hashmatullah Shahidi jokes after Greater Noida stadium flooded due to heavy rain

Afghanistan will host New Zealand in a one-off Test from September 9-13 in Greater Noida. But Afghanistan’s preparations ahead of the crucial game were marred by rain, as Delhi received intense rainfall on Thursday. The heavy rains caused dampness in the pitch, as the groundsmen had to use table fans to dry the strip.

Though the game is almost 10 days away, the teams will be hoping for an ideal start for the Test and weather Gods stay away during the game. The ground allotted by BCCI for the one-off Test lacks coverage and drainage system to protect the 30-yard circle. As striking as it gets, Afghanistan bowling coach, Hamid Hasan, had to look hard for a 10-yard spot with less dampness.

“Boys, we should have brought our swim gear. No way we are going to play here. Good place to swim,” skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

“Sir hum logo ko aadat hai, but New Zealand waalon ko kya jawaab doge (We have trained in much poorer conditions, but what would you say to the New Zealand team management?),” he added.

Rashid will play Test match after three years

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan’s T20I captain, led his team to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Though the team suffered a defeat at the hands of South Africa, it was their first knockout entry in any ICC event. The spinner came into the tournament after successful back surgery and the source revealed that Rashid not playing red-ball cricket for 6 months to one year was part of the plan.

“The plan for Rashid after the surgery was to gradually increase his workload. Not playing the longer format for the next six months to one year was also part of the plan. In Tests, he would be required to keep bowling from one end, and his back is not ready for that kind of workload. He should be available for the ODI series against South Africa next month,” the source said.
