Prodigious Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal finally got the reward for years of hardship after he received his maiden national call-up for India’s upcoming Test series against the Windies in July. The 21-year-old batter revealed the reaction of his father after he was named in India’s Test squad.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s India call-up was only a matter of time, especially after his blistering IPL 2023 campaign with the bat where he finished as Rajasthan Royals’ leading run-getter. He got his first taste of the Indian camp after he was named as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad in the reserves for the World Test Championship Final.

Although Jaiswal has not met his mother since his selection in the Indian squad, he revealed the emotional state of his father after the news broke in the media. He recalled being nervous before the team was announced for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies.

“My father started crying (when he got to know). I have not yet met my mother; I am going to see her in some time. I was out from the morning, had a practice session as well as some other work. I’m feeling good, I will try to do my best. I am excited but at the same time I just want to go out and express myself. I was a little nervous, till the time you do not get to know that your name is there in the team, there are butterflies. But it is a good feeling,” Jaiswal said to a news agency on Friday.

My preparations have been going well and I got to interact a lot with the senior players: Jaiswal

The 21-year-old opening batter revealed the inputs he received from several star Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane during his preparations. Jaiswal is one of four openers selected for India’s red-ball assignment against the Windies, commencing next month.

“My preparations have been going well and I got to interact a lot with the senior players. The conversation has been very simple – to focus on my work. I learned from them that in the end ‘it is all about you, how you take it going forward’,” said Jaiswal, adding that he has interacted a lot with India captain Rohit Sharma and other senior players in Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.
