With the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction nearing its date, a big question lies ahead about which team will star pacer Mohammed Shami land in. Following his outstanding performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker with 24 crucial wickets, Shami faced significant challenges.
A critical ankle injury forced him to undergo Achilles tendon surgery in February 2024, sidelining the right-arm pacer from professional cricket for a year. However, the veteran pacer made a stunning comeback in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Madhya Pradesh, and scalped six wickets, playing a crucial role in Bengal’s 11-run victory. Interestingly, he has been named in Bengal’s 22-member squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Shami’s IPL numbers are simply impressive. In his last full season with Gujarat Titans in 2023, he earned the Purple Cap, taking 28 wickets from 17 innings at an exceptional average of 18.64 and an economy rate of 8.03. Across his IPL career, he has taken 79 wickets in 77 matches, maintaining an economy of 8.63.
Despite being released by GT, Shami remains a prized asset. His ability to pick wickets in powerplay and death overs makes him a valuable buy for any franchise, who are looking for a reliable fast bowler. For the upcoming auction which is set to take place on November 24 and 25, respectively, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Shami has set his base price as INR 2 crore and is part of the Marquee Set 2.

AI Predicts Mohammed Shami’s IPL 2025 Team and Final Bid Price
Team | Final Bid Price |
Gujarat Titans | INR 9-12 crore (Right-to-Match card) |
For Shami, AI has predicted a return to his previous franchise Gujarat Titans (GT). The 34-year-old has been part of the franchise for three years, including their 2022 title-winning team. GT has not retained any pacer and is looking for a lethal pace bowler to boost their bowling attack, especially in the opening and death overs.
In the bowling department, they have retained ace spinners Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia and will look for someone who can spearhead the fast bowling department in IPL 2025. With one Right-To-Match (RTM) option available they would look to get the Amroha-born back to their side.
Meanwhile, AI has also predicted that Punjab Kings or Lucknow Super Giants might look to acquire his services as they need an experienced Indian pacer. If a bidding war triggers, the price could go up to INR 14 crore, considering his recent form and his brilliant skills in both powerplay and death overs.
